One of the dominant points of discussion here in New Zealand is the difficulty of playing with British Armies in general, and the problems in winning as the defender.
I was wondering if the problem is how we calculate victory?
With the desire to change the parameters by the minimum possible I would suggest that they remain as they are for armies that attack. As Cam has pointed out in the past most people choose the "Attack" option to try and get the extra units and general.
Perhaps we could play it that the Defender would count a draw result as a win, and thus there would be no draw?
Therefore if choosing or forced to attack, the onus is on the attacking player to break his opponent. I would suggest we might need to modify the test used to bring on off table reserves for the attacker to help them do this.
The Defender is now placed in a position where they are being called on to thwart the enemy attack, possibly so their army could attack with extra numbers on another part of the battlefield. This would then give defending British armies the option of employing historical delaying tactics. Also their lack of Organic cavalry will be less of a hindrance as they will be less concerned with breaking the enemy.
To me this seems more prferable than trying to hinder attacking armies use of cavalry. Though I felt the use of Disc tests to do combined arms charges worked very well.
Again any thoughts? Bryan
