Agreed. I to have been playing for about 35 years. I bought a copy of Lassalle and have now read them several times in detail and our group had a game.
Conclusion: I like them very much.
Why? Because conceptually, Sam has developed a set of rules not unlike the 6mm Mini-Nap rules that I developed over the past five years or so, available for free at http://www.runtus.org
Now, please, please, please don’t mishear me here. No, he has not copied them; I quite doubt Sam has ever seen them; what I am saying is that his CONCEPTS and mine as to how a Napoleonic game should be are alike.
For example, we both believe that the movement should be fairly simple and straightforward; shooting and hand-to-hand the same; few modifiers so you can actually remember them all after a game or two; no morale system as such; no points system as such; etc. Oh yes, and a QR sheet that I can actually read without my glasses let alone needing a magnifying glass. Remember the old WRG QR sheets?
At our club (Novocastrian Battlegamers) us Napoleonic players are fragmented lot; some like my Mini-Nap, some like On to Waterloo, some like Shako and some have even dabbled in the old WRG again, not to mention some sets that have come and gone, Empire for one.
However, most have now seen Lasalle and all are keen to give them a try.So, if Lasalle brings all of us Napoleonic players together under one system it is a good thing!
Thanks Sam for a fine set of rules.
